Difference in belting levels...protection
Ok, I have run into an issue that maybe someone on this side of things could remedy...I in the past regularly engaged in shall we say combative sports-mainly armed-in a kilt. Of late, I have been considering, after some suggestion from acquaintances, to try my hand at the MMA side. I have a rudimentary understanding of the sport, and no great burning questions there. HOWEVER, my question posed here is on the side of protection-not WHAT, but how. It is universally required that hard protection be worn. I wear my kilt(s) with the belt at the real waist. The only hard protection I have been able to have experience with is the variety with an elastic band that sits lower, nearly on top of the hips. Given most of the fighting is done without a shirt, and the kilt tends to wander...How do you keep the protection from navigating south? With gloved hands, it is very difficult to adjust things...

Not an MMA player or ref, but my first question is whether the rules would allow kilts. If so, then I'd suggest bike or compression shorts under the kilt and over the protection, allowing both modesty and stability of the protective gear.

Well, on the amateur side here-I know that officially nothing but approved shorts can be worn-but on the side of unsanctioned stuff...I use the MMA term loosely, too. Mainly a stand up striker, I have worn a kilt boxing with no adverse effects. My biggest annoyance with compression shorts combined with hard protection is the fact that I have a fairly muscular/moving midsection, and things wander about, even without the kilt belt factor.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend a kilt at all. Those guys tend to prefer grappling over all else. You will just end up rolling on the floor and getting it torn.

Hmph. Sticking to swords and big sticks then.
And pitchforks!

Probably gonna get put on probation for this one...Don't give'm a chance at any extra handholds! I stick to slick shorts on the ground, and only skirt on stand up boxing. MUCH safer, believe me.

Let's be real, though. Most of thpse guys are just looking for a slug-fest, not an exercise in form. 9/10 matches that I've seen usually end up as grappling and holdimg matches. I have an aversion to MMA, personally. It seems so...unsporting.

Ha-quite. Stand up boxer myself, amateur. I won't say boxing is any more sporting than MMA, but I will say that the crowd is generally less testosterone charged, and matches more rigidly officiated. Back on topic, I have been wearing a skirt in the ring since way before the Olympics made it popular-and it has absolutely no place in MMA, except to make a statement.

I hear you. MMA is just not my cup of tea.
