Kilt hose tops?

I have seen advertised "kilt hose tops" what are tops?
Are they a cover for solid colour hose or a complete "sock"?

There's two different types that I've seen. There's a leg-warmer version, essentially a sock minus the foot part and then there's just the upper turn-over part or cuff type (like an oversized sweat wrist band).

Oh yeah, I think the sock version, without the foot, is designed to be worn with spats..

Hose tops are easy to knit , and very useful at changing, or upgrading a simple outfit, I like this style with a simple cable design in lovely shetland wool

Ha! NOW a few things about hose make sense to me!

The first two kilties on the page-header banner are wearing Hose Tops!!! Now I get it!!!

Just a word of caution, though. Most people in the Highland Dress world outside of this form, when hearing "hose tops" will think of these:


These are usually diced, though sometimes in an Argyle pattern, and are worn by bands, with spats, as part of the uniform.


The decorative cuffs which can be worn over the top of standard kilt hose are a different animal altogether, but often referred to by the same name here on X Marks. I prefer to refer to them as "cuffs" just to avoid confusion. My wife has knit some for folks in the past.

I'm not familiar with bates corfram shoes, but I am wearing fairly classic,well polished black brogues with a thin sole, the sort of shoe that I would normally wear with a smart look, in either brown, tan, or black.
