Check out brands such as Thor-Lo, I know they have many varieties of performance socks. You may even find some made for cross country skiing that come to the knee. Having run ultra-marathons my best advice would be get two to three pair and change them every 20 or so miles. When I run fifty milers I change socks at least twice, and if I have them shoes too. Moisture is your enemy so even a thin liner sock would wick away moisture then if you got a wool blend performance sock your feet would stay in fairly good shape. Thor-Lo even makes an olive green and black close to knee high sock for military, you might look at the military surplus stores or Thor-Lo on line. There are other brands out there of wool mixes, Ive just been running, hiking, climbing, skiing etcs in Thor-Lo for about 25 years.
This is a link to the military sock I mentioned on the Thor-Lo site.
