Personally, I backpack in a kilt, and I wear regular old wool-blend backpacking socks. They're not knee-highs, so if you just gotta have something knee-high then I'd look into XC skiing socks. I used to wear wicking, synthetic liners, but somehow just stopped doing that for no good reason. That "system" worked, though.
I'd suggest to consider the idea that there are times when function trumps form, and having a couple of good pairs of sox on under those boots, and avoiding blisters, etc. etc is WAY more important than sartorial splendour.
