I have to say that the footwear needs for throwing at the Highland Games, and for walking miles upon miles on trails, especially with a big pack on your pack, are very different.
At the Games, if it's really wet or the grass is deep, I'll wear mid-height soccer/football/rugby cleats. No way would I EVER hike in those. If the grass is more moderate, then I'll wear turf shoes. I have a pair of not-very-nubby artifical turf shoes, mid-height for throwing on artificial turf platforms. Since some Highland Games in Scotland actually have the athletes throw from a concrete surface, if I were doing that I would take rotation/glide shotput/discus shoes. Javelin cleats are becoming popular at the Games and Tanel 360's are a standby.
All of these are wildly different from hiking boots. As the boots/shoes are different, so are the socks. I wear relatively thin, synthetic-blend rugby socks to throw in, but I would never hike in those things.
