To Bonnet or Not to Bonnet

I have a formal event to attend at the end of the month. I just purchased a Montrose jacket with the jabot & cuffs (the whole 9 yards). Where the event is taking place they asked that our heads are covered and that we wear the correct head gear. Will it look odd to wear a Balmoral Bonnet with a Montrose jacket?

If you are talking about wearing this bonnet indoors then the answer is yes.

    Cheers

Jamie is quite right. The Montrose with jabot is white tie equivalent. I attend white tie events quite regularly and cannot think of one event where gentlemen would wear headdress, except for coming to before or leaving afterwards. And certainly never indoors.

If the location is a Jewish temple, wear a yarmulke. Most temples provide extras for visitors. If not, wear either a pill box hat or a paper grocery sack with holes for eyes and mouth, of course.

Or, you could ignore the above advice and ask the sponsors what they regard as "correct".

Finally, welcome to the XMTS forum from the mountains of northern New Mexico. You will find most of my posts similarly helpful.

Jamie: Right on! What an uncanny coincidence - visitor yarmulkes that match your Isle of Skye (?) kilts.

Those great pictures also offer an alternative for the OP regardless of the location of his formal event. Just throw a tartan rosette under a steam roller and pop it on top.

I would simply leave the bonnet at home. I have never worn a bonnet with Highland evening attire, though I have seen some that do.

To clarify, the host have said that you are to wear an appropriate head covering, right? So suggesting not to wear smething is not very helpful.

What type of event is it? Will it be indoors or outdoors? Can you provide us more information about the event and perhaps you will get better advice.

Right. It sounds like the OP will be attending an event that may have a religious context, perhaps he will enlighten us in due course. And if the event is indeed a religious one, say at a Jewish Temple as mookien and Jamie have pointed out, then I would think the appropriate headdress geared more towards the likes of what others will be wearing would be the best approach. But hey, it's a personal preference too. If the OP wishes to wear a bonnet with his evening attire, then so be it! I'm quite sure he will look very smart and well turned out with whatever he decides to do.

    Cheers,
