First off. WELCOME TO THE GREAT XMARKS RABBLE! And yes it looks darker but that may be because of the time of day the pictures are being taken by the mob.

Not to be too persnicketty, but "colour" isn't used by artists etc. "Colour" is a vague generic term.

The term is "hue" which refers to a colour's place on the colour wheel.

"Tint" is the amount of white, "Shade" is the amount of black.

    Another term is "saturation".

Here's one of many sites which discuss these terms. Artists need such terminology in order to discuss colours in a technical and specific manner

The tartan that he is wearing is Mcgregor hunting modern. It can be found at Scotsweb, USA kilts, and a lot of others. It comes in 16 oz. and 13 oz. Not every one caries it, but I know that Scotsweb does carry that tartan, because they are making me a kilt in that very (I think too cool) tartan...

    There you go...

Welcome to XMarks! Indeed the tartan is MacGregor Modern, and I suggest talking to which ever kilt maker you decide to go with about the colors from the different mills.

Haven't tried many others, but USA Kilts has been great so far! Have gotten 1x casual kilt, 1x 8-yrd premier, 1x PV mini kilt (for wife), and 1x wool mini kilt (Yes, also for wife!) from them, and I have a 5-yard wool kilt on the way! You can definitely say I'm a very happy customer so far, and their service is top notch!

If you want to go with USA Kilt, give them a call and they'll take good care of ya!

Thank you very much to everybody! That's a great help here!
Now... where to order? What is a good choice for a first kilt? Scotweb? MacGregor & MacDuff? Other suggestions??

@paulhenry: Is that the same tartan? The first one looks like the Modern Hunting and the second like the "normal" Modern...
