"A Tale of the '45", painting by James Hamilton - what tartan?
Does anyone have a best guess, as to what the tartan of the kilt, in the painting ( by James Hamilton) "A Tale of the '45"?
(sorry, but I couldn't figure out how to post the image)
I suspect that this is the same tartan used in Hamilton's picture "The Massacre of Glencoe" but with a red overstripe added by the painter to "liven" the dark kilt just a tad. Hamilton was painting a good century after the last Jacobite rebellion (and almost 200 years after Glencoe) and like many painters used whatever props were to hand, and that would include whatever kilt he had in the closet.
MoR's reply is spot on. It's a representation of tartan and not supposed to show a particular clan. Note also that the chap is wearing plain knitted hose - very un-18th century.
