The "earthiest" tartan I can think of is the "peat" version of the Ulster tartan:

As Nighthawk indicated, the Stillwater Heavyweight Saffron really is not that bright. Paired with a sweater in the right color I think it looks very earthy (and is warm, too.)

Below is about as down and earthy as I get, ... outside of hog wrestling. 
The kilt is a Douglas Reproduction crafted by Matt (New House Highland) from Dalgliesh-woven hard tartan. The hose are the Glenmore Bison. And, I think the boots are really Keen, too.
Good luck on your quest for earthiness.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

The Ike jacket is a natural to wear with the kilt as is the battle dress jacket you have in the first post. I was anxious about ordering from Singapore but it got here in good time and is good quality. Way cool.

Summer weight! How cool! Gonna check that out. I also have the replica Officer's Ike Jacket and R.A.F. battle jacket from the War2 era. Both go well with kilts.

Definitely prefer the worsted. These weather worn colours do seem to be less 'in-yer-face' for everyday wear. I love the bright contrast with a Charlie, but its a different sort of look....
BTW - loooove that brown belt!!!!!!

There are some fantastic ideas here, and some great links too!
I have toyed with worsted tartans quite a bit, but after seeing some colours I would not have chosen from the swatches, I have to do some reconsidering!!!
