    Need a kilt made

    Hi,
I am sending this out to the masses in hope of some advice. I just picked up some fabric that measures 200" x 60", it was really inexpensive & I just couldn't pass it up (loved the pattern). I don't know what type of fabric it is but suspect a wool blend of some type. All this being said I would like to know if anyone would be able to make a kilt for me. I would really like to try myself but don't want to risk messing it up. I don't have a lot to spend & would greatly appreciate any help, I can send a swatch if needed.

    Many thanks in advance, Lloyd

Hello Lloyd and welcome to X Marks.

Most likely your fabric is a wool blend as it is 60 inches wide, all wool tends to be woven 54 inches wide.

I would caution you before sending off your fabric, to ensure it is suitable for making a kilt. Kilt material tends to be quite heavy, up to 16oz per yard of the 54inch fabric and it is fairly finely woven and although it swings when pleated it retains its shape. If your material is easily deformed it might not take the strain of being pleated.

When a kilt is made there should be reinforcements sewn into the fell - the sewn down part of the pleats at the top, which helps to take the strain, but some fabric was destined to be a blanket and not a kilt. Lighter fabric - say 10oz per running yard might make a kilt which is fine indoors but in a breeze might 'do a Marilyn' and fly up around your ears.

Hopefully, however, you have got yourself some good kilting material.

Thanks for the advice Anne, this looks like something you would make into a mans suit.

EDIT : I just noticed your name in your signature. For some reason I responded in french.
Contact me by PM and I'll see what I can do about your material. I might get into town next week.
Chances are you bought some PV (PolyViscose) material.
