Jumper is a bit dicey in the US they may send you to the toddler department. That's the only jumpers I have heard of until now.
Really? What a convoluted web this is turning out to be!

I searched US Amazon with the term "jumper" in clothing. I found some of our vests and this which is the only item calling it jumper in the title:

English is a common language but local/regional usage is more slang than english.

    Sorry about the sidetrack Dale.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

Sweater vest would be the most common term in this neck of the woods. I wear them almost daily to work in the winter, with or without a tie. A little added warmth but not as hot as a full sweater. All solid colours, not a Fair isle in sight. And yes, I have worn them with a kilt in the same way that I would wear a regular sweater, i.e. with a dress shirt.

I remembered today that when I was in Edinburgh in September of 2010, to present the then-new St. Ninian's Day papal visit tartan to the Scottish Parliament, I recall seeing Colin Brown, MD of Ingles Buchan (who wove the tartan) there in his kilt and a patterned sweater. I know the pattern was blue and white, and I believe it was Fair Isle (though of course I have no way of knowing for sure now). I do not, however, recall whether the sweater was sleeved or not. I guess that just goes to show you how little difference it probably makes.

But in any case, there you have it, one of Scotland's own tartan weavers in Edinburgh wearing a Fair Isle sweater with his kilt -- unless my memory is just going bonkers!

I'll see your digression and raise you one: I searched yesterday for the etymology of the term "tank top".

Apparently its first recorded English usage was in 1968; and it derives from the 1920s term "tank suit" -- referring to the one-piece swimsuits women wore in a swimming pool or "tank".

Today was a chilly, damp & showery, overcast day, with an Islay malt sort of evening coming up; so I decided to give the Fair Isle a try. Went to a movie, followed by a pint and a bite in an establishment in the same shopping center. The folks working there expressed their approval of the combination.

As for whether it really works with the kilt, you'll have to judge for youselves:

I remember shopping in a nice store in San Francisco (Nordstrom) and asking where I could find a jumper/pullover and was met with incomprehension. Luckily I then spotted one on a dummy and was able to point to it - "Oh you mean a sweater".

Thank you for volunteering to undertake this clearly difficult and time consuming scientific research.
