In the opening sequence the two Mess pipers are wearing ordinary civilian pipe band kit: note the doublet here has no collar badges. And their sporrans are typical civilian.

The piping is very nice... I wonder who the pipers were, perhaps pipers from The London Scottish. That version of The Black Bear has some tricky fingering, difficult to play cleanly.

An overrated film, in my opinion.

I think you have to have been in the military to get the conflicting personality and leadership styles. I've seen units torn apart over the shenanagins at the command level!

Amen, Brian. I have recommended the film to some of the ROTC cadets I have taught in military history classes -- all of them came back with very positive reviews.

As a military historian (and a 4F one at that that couldn't enlist due to childhood asthma), the attention to detail in the film is worth its weight in gold.

Funny you should mention that, but one of my former students, originally from Mexico, did make a similar comment to that about regimental customs & traditions...
