I believe that is the Brave tartan. I can't find it in the STA but I am just not sure what, exactly, it is called. They registered the tartan about the time the movie came out.

The DunBroch tartan. Here it is

Don't you love the contradictory hyperbole like "deep scarlet"? I think somewhere else mentions "deep sky blue" or summat. Ha!

BTW it's odd that Pixar, in designing a tartan that supposedly has an "old" look to it, would make a tartan that instead resembles recent tartans like Anderson and Royal Canadian Air Force.

I say good on Mark Andrews for wearing a kilt to the Oscars. Given that this was a Hollywood event and "creative black tie" is de rigueur, I think he did quite well; his look is built on traditional elements, but has a decidedly au courant flair. Black shirt black tie is pretty normal for those types, his funky sporran goes with his tartan, and at least he had a good polish on his ankle boots.

Most people on this forum are concerned with the minutiae of kilt wearing and it is rare for anyone to escape our collective fine tooth comb. Even if we accept that he is going for a Hollywood black tie look, there are still some things to comment on.

What bothered me most was his hose cuff, followed by the way he wore his jacket. The turnover on his hose was doubled (for thickness?), which makes his flashes look like the proverbial flags flying in the wind. I would also have avoided tartan flashes, though I know some people like them.

I think his Argyll fit him just fine, but that buttoning it was distorting it. Some people have mentioned that the jacket cuffs were too short or that he showing too much shirt cuff, but I think that is actually a combined function of the buttoned front, his desire to show his cufflinks, and the animated posturing he engaged in. In other pictures it doesn't look as bad and in photos from other events where he wore his kilt with a different jacket, we can see his preference for showing more shirt cuff.

Here are a bunch of larger images from the web, so that we can see the details a bit better. The Oscars first and other events in another post because there are too many images.

Part II, for comparison. Different jacket, same approximately the same amount of shirt cuff. He even managed to get that fine-yet-dangerous balance of wearing a belt under a waistcoat where it is centered, not bulging, and shows no tartan between belt and vest.

"Creative black tie" is now my favorite way to describe "Hollywood formal."

While not traditional, Mark looks great. The current fashion for younger men is to wear jackets too tight and sleeves too short by "traditional" standards, so he looks like it's carried over to his Argyle. As to those boots, they look smashing with the kilt, even if a bit casual. Personally, I don't like the long flashes, but guys, it's not like he's flat-capped and white-hosed here!

Again, not a traditional formal look, but this is the Oscars, where unconventional is the "norm". The Oscars haven't truly been a "black tie" event since 1966 or so.
