I have both, Tweed flat cap in a houndstooth and a tweed bonnet I made. I like wearing either, especially in winter as the hair is kept cut close. Ill get some photos of the fore and aft houndstooth hat I made this weekend, its pretty darn comfortable and smart looking.
Easy to make tweed bonnet from circa 1956 tweed fabric

Not the best photo, but the Houndstooth Tweed flat cap I bought in Scotland.

So wear what you like. In the very cold weather Ive even got a Russian fur hat, a Mad Bomber fur lined bomber hat and various wool pullover hats but I prefer the bonnet or flat cap. Of course they come off when I enter the pub or other buildings.

I like a flat cap. IMHO they are great. I echo what other posts have said; wear what you want.

Whatever hat you decide to wear, for heaven's sake take it off when you go inside a building!

Flat Caps - casual kilting? Sure
Flat Caps - traditional Highland dress? No
I've been known to wear flats with my kilt quite a bit when on kilt crawls. In no way was I dressed "Traditional" otherwise:

I wear my flat cap all the time and regardless of "tradition" I think they look a whole lot better then the fore and aft style hats that some might say should be worn. At the end of the day a hat is meant to protect the head from sun, rain, and heat loss and often times more traditional head dress just doen't cut it. If you look in the mirror and like what you see then rock it like you own it!

I am a fan of both. I wear a fore-and-aft hat. I wear a tweed flat cap. Both have been traditionally worn, both have come and gone in and out of style and back again.
I don't care for Balmorals or Glengarries for me. That's why I don't wear them.
Just don't wear a baseball cap with the bill flipped up and cocked to the side!

brewerpaul, that tweed bonnet looks fantastic on you. Nice job.
Let the headgear fit the moment and your whim. Being follically challenged, I've been known to wear just about anything "up top" with a kilt—from a Tam, to a Tilley, and many a tweed flat cap along the way. Just keep the spirit of the event in mind.
