Attractive as it sounds, getting midges drunk is not the solution sadly. When I smoked a pipe companions used to congregate downwind in the forlorn hope that the acrid fumes would keep the midges away - sadly it didn't. Jungle Formula seems to work and I have more than once returned from an evening's fishing looking like a coal miner, black with a coating of dead midges, killed as they landed. A local in Gairloch told me a story of a local minister who had upset his flock over some matter or other and they exacted retribution by stripping him, tying him to tree and leaving him for the midges. Torment indeed I imagine.

I can relate! Whenever I'm fishing it's always the local midge (the blackfly) and the midge-like mosquito that drive me bonkers. Still, when the bugs are out, the fish are hungry...

I left here a few hours ago and we were all still fighting, I come back to find you are all pished and toasting each other along with the midges and blackflies!
Just my luck to be late to the party, is there a bit of a heel left in any of those bottles?

I think they have been toasting to each other, swatting flies, to a more conciliatory state, midges will do that.

Nathan might have polished off the Glen Breton and Jock's stockpile of Talisker is probably a bit too far away, so I'll offer you a wee dram of Lagavulin. I trust that robust, smoky, peat monster will be to your liking
