Snow - for some of the British Isles

Much of the more Northern parts of the British isles have been hit by snow and high winds, closing schools, making travel dangerous or impossible.

In the South heavy rain has caused flooding, with lots of trees and branches down and even a house collapes.

Personally - it is a bit cold and wet outside, but only rather dismal rather than dangerous.

Last year at this time the weather was warm and dry, with record temperatures recorded.

I hope that all 'local' members are safe and in shelter, and not tempted to venture off too far from the beaten track, even if it does look like fun to head for the hills.

Yes indeed. Spring started off as usual with a few pleasantly warm days at the end of February / beginning of March, we even had a butterfly in the garden.
Then the unexpected big chill arrived two weeks ago.
Tuesday was our worst day this week with whiteout conditions and all school transport cancelled. Today we have snow showers but most roads are clear.
This evening starts our Reivers Festival Weekend which kicks off the start of the summer tourist season. We have re-enactments, parades, an encampment, medieval sports and a medieval market, a funfair and a fireworks display. All outdoor activities except this evening's Scocha concert in the Town Hall. It is an event which we look forward to eagerly during the long winter months of hibernation, usually it is pleasantly warm for all these outdoor activities in late March but it might not be so much fun this year when the forecast is for a maximum temperature of 0c, 32f for Saturday.

As at 1430 GMT, we have just the odd snow flake blowing in the chill wind up here----------so far!

Usually anywhere north of Watford in my experience. Edinburgh has been snow-free today, bitterly cold though.

A lot of it seems to be coming down right now in the West Midlands of England.

Shan't be venturing far this weekend.

Could you be kind enough to define "bitterly cold" for those of us not in Scotland. As an example, here in Maryville, Missouri, USA, the day started at a brisk 23 F/ -5C and warmed up to its current 32 F/0 C. Our area is expected to get 3-5 inches of snow tonight, Kansas City area to the south is expecting 6-9 in.. Ironically a week ago it was 77 F/ 25 C for the afternoon high. Spring has begun colder than the last official week of winter.

Ah - well I did write 'much' not 'all' - and it does look as though in the next few hours the snow could spread even further. I think that even if you don't have snow at the moment the situation might not continue.

I am actually a little jealous of those with snow, as it is some time since I was able to create any snow sculptures here. My signature items are a snow Rupert (the bear) and a couple of dinosaurs.

Just seconds after I sent the last post, the power went off, we are back on again now. The wind is a problem , but snow is still absent apart from the high-tops.

Ah yes, I have trekked that way - reaching there after crossing the wilderness beyond Blandford Forum, then on towards the lions at Longleat.

It isn't really the temperature but the wind - snow is usually not too bad - it sometimes has to warm up to snow, but when the wind is driving the snow horizontally so hard that it seems to want to go through rather than round, that is when it gets miserable. We have no snow, but the rain possibly hits harder. The wind is just plain nasty.

Now last year, it was day after day of warm dry weather in March, and the jet stream was far to the North. At the moment the jet stream is about level with the Bay of Biscay and heading towards the Mediterranean.
