The National Defense Service Medal (NDSM) is a military service medal of the United States Armed Forces originally commissioned by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Created in 1953, the National Defense Service Medal was intended to be a "blanket campaign medal" awarded to any member of the United States Armed Forces who served honorably during a designated time period of which a "national emergency" had been declared.
In the years since the creation of the National Defense Service Medal, it is authorized only for the following time periods:[2]
Korean War June 27, 1950 – July 27, 1954
Vietnam War January 1, 1961 – August 14, 1974
Persian Gulf War August 2, 1990 – November 30, 1995
Global War on Terrorism September 11, 2001 – present

Nothing special, I can assure you. I just happened to know that the first one existed. I am actually surprised that there aren't more.

Lol...I want to see a Kuwaiti Liberation (Kuwait) Tartan. Now that right there is FUNNY!
I like the idea of a purple heart tartan...I can see it in my minds eye, purple and white, symetrical, simple amd understated...

Great info being posted.
These existing military awards / kilts seem to very nearly reflect the award. Makes sense. But I was thinking of a Purple Heart kilt in a more muted vein. Dark grey and black majority with the purple just an accent thrwad

I hear what you are saying Jmc, but shouldn't it be recognisable as the Purple Heart?

I can see adding a dark grey (black) and a gold (there look to be two different colours), but the ribbon is as shown here.

JMC,
You ought to just play with a tartan designer and come up with your own design. If you find something that you really like, you can always present it to the Purple Heart Society (?) for recognition, or just register it and let it be in recognition of those who have received the PH.

Thanks I think I may go tinker aroound with it. I was giving thought on the road. I still like a dark tartan of mostly charcoal and black. Purple flanked by white pin stripes. No gold since the ribbon since absent any yellow.
I figure it would be small company who'd be wearing one of these. Once I tinker around on the tartan sitw, can I save the image and post it here?
Thanks all,
Jon

Ok, Something like this. I would prefer the black and charcoal more muted. Any who. Y'all get the idea. Thoughts?

I would add more of the purple stripes. Perhaps add aother couple nto the large black area?? I like that you made the stripes pretty much mirror the ribbon. It keeps the PH reference while mantaining the dark background you want.
