    I just noticed this:

His Grace is wearing black shoes and a brown sporran.

I... I don't know what to do with that.

As many, many, ..., many folks on the forum will tell you, black shoes with a brown sporran is traditional, Okey Dokey, A-OK, etc. For me that's one less thing to worry about. Whew!

How about brown or tan shoes with black belt (and sporran), have there been any opinions on that combination? I couldn't do it with a bifurcated garment, mind.

I don't think that is acceptable, or at least not as acceptable, though no one is going to arrest you for it. Just don't do it unless you want to start a new fashion trend.

Highland Dress has long ignored any sort of "rule" about the leathers matching. In the "traditional Highland Dress" as it has come down to us from the beginning of the 20th century, "Day" sporrans were nearly always brown (usually pigskin, or deerskin) and the sturdy Outdoor brogues were usually black. I have a collection of Highland Dress catalogues from the 1920s and 1930s and all the "Day" sporrans on offer are brown, all the shoes (and belts) on offer are black.

Here we go! Old catalogues from c1930

You can have "day" sporrans in any colour you want, as long as you want brown, in 1938

This brown sporran/black shoe thing goes way back... how about 1700?

About the other way, brown shoes with the other stuff black, it can be seen in The Highlanders Of Scotland.

A telling, well-documented blow struck at the dreaded Kilt Kops!

Brown and black have a long history of being worn together! (And smartly so, in these instances)

    Take that(!), Fashion Police.

Really? I thought the shoes were meant to match the purse. Er, sporran.

That's good to know. I hadn't thought of it before seeing this picture, but it suddenly struck me as being... off. That's how I dressed in the daytime games I've gone to -- black ghillies and a brown day-wear sporran -- and I hadn't even thought of it.

I guess it's fortunately one of those things I'll just not worry about.

Thanks for setting my mind at ease.

Nicely done, Robert. I'm sure you read The Scotsman March 29 article "Moles at Culloden are celebrated by historians". Yes?

His Grace, has more money that God and Garth Brooks put together..and is authorised the Balmoral tartan...he can pretty much do as he pleases...lol

Really though, I do it all the time..more out of necessity, as I only have one sporran and it is sort of a blood brown. My take is, event though I am wearing a skirt, my shoes do not have to match my purse...lol.

I... I don't know what to do with that.
