Well, you say you're misplaced in Scotland. If that's so, I'll pass to the resident Scots for their opinions. Your banner doesn't actually say where you are.
Here in Canada, I've selected a Sheriffmuir for my Lodge and banquet wear. It's forgiving as my weight fluctuates, and can be dressed down if you wear it without a jabot but rather, a shirt and tie. The presence or absence of a vest will also affect its level of formality. The Argyle is considered your most flexible of jackets and, depending on the cloth selected, can run all the way from daywear to black tie - the latter with vest, black bowtie, etc., provided that you push your luck a wee bit.
The Prince Charlie which is so commonly worn these days is actually less than a century old, so I'm a little less enthusiastic there since I am very much a traditionalist.
The most important thing, wherever you are, is to "fit in," and not look utterly out of step with those around you... except those around you who don't know what they're doing. Hang around here for a few months before investing your cash and you'll get a wide range of thoughts and hopefully distill out the essence of the thing.
Meanwhile, welcome to the "Great Rabble!"
