Gotcha. If you click where it says "Material" on the top of their page, you'll find that they fail to give the weight of either their plain weave or twill weave cloth. As discussed, their plain weave is 8 or 9 oz tie weight. Their twill weave I assume is a 10 oz weight. I know they do keep some stock of this cloth, as well. I don't think they do anything heavier as stock, except for special situations (such as the St. Ninian tartan).
if you actually look at the page it does say:-
on the tie weight " Buy this Plain Weave Material and make up any product you wish, 8oz 100% Pure New Wool"
and on the skirt weight "Buy this Twill Weave Material and make into any product you wish, 10oz 100% Pure New Wool."
So while we are completely in agreement that really the standard tartans they weave are really too light for kilts, they have at least been clear on their website of the weights and type of weave of the lighter fabrics although I imagine they don't have a wonderful selvedge!
