    A Formal Piping Recital

I have the chance to go to a Formal recital http://www.johnmaclellanmemorial.com/ in Edinburgh in June, At this time info is a bit sketchy on the dress code, but from the pictures of last years event most men would appear to be kilted with either PC or Argyle type jackets and black bow ties, so the question is does your bow tie have to be black?
I have a really nice square end self tie bow tie which has very thin navy blue and red stripes would this be acceptable?

In all honesty, black would be best.

Every Regiment, Squadron, Ship, Station, University and all the hundreds of other social groupings will have a bow tie and cummerbund in the Corps, Division, Group, Fleet colours. But they are only worn at internal functions at home.

One Squadron invites another; the guest Squadron wears black, the host Squadron wears either black or their own Squadron colours.

    Black is always safest.

    Regards

    Chas

I have several tartan bow ties but they are rarely worn whereas my black bow tie is getting more and more excursions.l

As you're not going to a Squadron do, I reckon black would be your best bet.

I'll just add to what the learned men above have advised, black tie.

Here are the pipers from one such event. Looks like black bow ties all around. Gordon Walker stands out, as usual, being the only man not in a PC and the only man with buckles on his shoes

I have always had a love for the playing of John MacLellan. This album, in fact, was my introduction to piping, back around 1970, and what an excellent introduction it was!
