Oatmeal and Lovat Green combine very well although, I must say, some other colours are also attractive. The only 'look' I personally would not like to follow is the ‘casual look’ (irrespective the color). I my opinion a kilt needs ‘hose’... always.

My vote is for claret, red, or lovat green.

Indeed. While black, green and blue are obvious suggestions in the light of the kilt’s colouring, there is an almost infinite range of other colours that will also go.
What hasn’t been asked is what flashes to wear (although two examples of red have been provided).
Red is a colour that suggests itself, being entirely different from the colours of the kilt, but my feeling is that it should not be worn with red or claret hose.
And whatever colour you choose for your hose, a contrasting set of flashes will work well.
I find that when I wear my Mighty Men kilt with oatmeal hose, the red flashes look a bit out of place, and green works better. But red goes with green any time.
Red and blue can go, but to my mind that depends on the overall look.
    Regards,
    Mike

As stated, you can wear about any color. Pick what you like.

But since you asked: I'd wear lovat green with red flashes, just like the Blackwatch did and God intended. Looks great, understated but tasteful. In fact I often wear a pair I bought from the Black Watch Regimental store (the one in Scotland which may not exist anymore). I also have two other pair, one from Lewis, which I like even better. I wear them with my Robertson Hunting (which is basically a Black Watch with some red and blue stripes added) as well as just about any other kilt I own.

But then there is the really cool claret colored pair knitted custom by piperdbh. With navy flashes, they're really slick!

Red & white diced was the original choice

and up through the 18th century

    Here's a bold choice from the 1860s

and in No2 Dress the army uses Lovat Green

Myself, I would probably wear claret/burgundy, for the very reason that there's no red in the tartan.
