    Frustration over great kilt brooches

    Hello everyone,

I was wondering if I could get some advice on brooches for my great kilt? I love the wide array and selection available for fly/piper's plaid but it seems like a very small and obscure selection of pins that are actually strong enough for great kilts are available. I was just curious if anyone knows of a good source for pins other than penannular brooches? (Please do not tell me to get a penannular brooch that stopped being "a thing" in the 1100s, I already have enough inaccuracy just in the fact I'm wearing a lowlander tartan)

Search ebay for "fly plaid brooch" and you'll find a plethora of styles. Some have stone in various colors, others have characters like thistles or stags.

I haven't worn my breachen faile in several years, but I wore one with a purple stone. It was quite eye catching with a black Montrose and jabot for very dressy wear. Look here: http://compare.ebay.com/like/3106435...Types&var=sbar

Oh, yeah, many of the advertisers right here will likely carry the same type brooch.

If you like that sort of thing, I can personally attest to this lion broach from USAKilts, will work just dandy on a great kilt.

My biggest fear is if I'll get hurt again with another artsy pin that is only for display or wear with a fly plaid haha. I'm a big guy who took 6 yards of tartan for my breachen faile. I have a brooch that works but it's barely 2 inches across and I feel kind of silly looking at these massive targe throwbacks of a pin other people wear.

Are you wearing it as a costume or out and about? That may affect your choices.

It doesn't really affect my choice. If I like the style I might go for it. There are 5 or 6 highland games a year I have access to and I'm trying to go to most of them. The Grandfather Mountain one being the biggest and longest at 4 days.

That is a gorgeous pin. I'll certainly leave that on my list of maybes.

I found the Nagle Forge and Foundry and they have a pretty rich selection but most aren't displayed online because they make them all themselves and the designs change every couple of years. I'm probably going to just end up with one of their pieces. Thanks anyway guys! Hope if anyone else has this problem the Nagle Forge link will be helpful.
