In your case I think the argyle jacket could be dressed up with a formal shirt and black tie, or dressed down to semi-formal with a regular shirt and long or bow tie.

I wore a dark grey Argyle on formal nights for my cruises with Royal Caribbean from UK, the other lads who also wore the kilt had Prince Charlie or Argyle. I did take my waistcoat but didn't feel comfortable wearing it.

I might add a Mae West, too; I understand they are available in both formal and casual styles, LOL!
I was a blue water US Navy sailor and I must say, that based on recent events, my confidence level concerning cruise ships is not particularly high.

Norwegian hasn't had any incidents. I believe that is Carnival yer thinking of. I guess their rates are way down!

While the cruise lines have their problems, the Navy seems to run into each other more often (unreps, changing formation, etc). On the other hand, dozens of cruise ships are out every day and have few problems. The cruise lines are very conscious of the safety of their passengers - and the loss of income if a ship can't sail, or, as Carnival is finding out, when people lack confidence in the product.
I'm a travel agent and I won't book Carnival or Costa (both owned by Carnival) unless the client really, really wants to go, which so far hasn't happened. Celebrity, Princess, Disney, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and others aren't having any problem getting passengers.

Gee Sir William, a travel agent eh? We did Norwegian out of NYC, a 9 night cruise down to the northern Caribbean, and have nothing but good things to say. One sit-down lunch, my wife had a somewhat cool grilled sandwich, and one night at a sit-down dinner, my steak looked good, but was half grizzle. Neither was much of a big deal because you could order another entree if you so desired, have desert, or head for the wonderful buffet they had running most of the time. The staff was great, and the service exceptional.
We are planning a Disney cruise with the entire family (three sons, one or two significant others, a daughter-in-law and our grandson) for 2015, which will be the year before our grandson starts school. Between now and then we're saving our pennies for the cruise.

Yeah, it's my post-DOD retirement job. Wife won't let me sit home and watch soaps.
Disney is our favorite cruise line, and we've always sailed without kids. Can't beat the customer service.
I have an agreement with her that when we cruise to any "Commonwealth" destination (Canada, Bermuda, UK, etc) that I can wear my kilt for the formal nights. Otherwise, I have to wear a tux. On our cruise to Bermuda last year I was the only kiltie on board - but the two Scottish officers both enjoyed it, as did a number of ladies!

Too bad about the wife and soaps thing Sir William, but what's a lad to do?
That's a very good recommendation for Disney. How many Disney cruises have you and the wee lass taken?
I am at a point now that I have sufficient kilt stuff to feel comfortable getting kilted up on a cruise. I may get kilted up tomorrow with all this new stuff I got and get some pics before heading out to a meeting of the St. Andrews Society. We'll see how it goes. I'm still a workin stiff and been very busy, so it's one day at a time...
Take care, and best of luck with the travel business!
