I could, if I so choose, wear ten , maybe more tartans, but I don't as it is not the Scots way.

Many people quite rightly point out that most Clan tartans are at best, some two hundred years old and tend to scoff at the way that many classic tartans were designed------well someone had to do it and for me, it all adds to the history of tartan, but one thing to remember is that many tartans are still older than some countries.

That's all very well, but what about tartan that are used as regimental tartan too like the MacKenzie modern. I've been asked about my clan connection and about my army connection (Sadly I have none).
Contradicting point 3 you can actually wear a tartan you should wear because of your connections and still not be a part of the group.

Not quite true... the following is a Patterson tartan that is held as stock by one of the mills which can easily be obtained:

    A question for Downunder Kilt.

Do you know if the Australian Cultural Attache, Les Patterson has a kilt made in this tartan?

I find it interesting that the waters get murky when it comes to:

    1. Pipe Bands
    2. Military

When you're in a pipe band, people seem to be happy to put aside their objections to wearing another's clan tartan. I wonder why this is when some have such strong opinions of it in other circumstances. The same goes for MacKenzie, Campbell, Cameron (Erracht), Stewart Royal, etc tartans in Military settings. I'm not poking fun or making a backhanded statement... I truly wonder how this dichotomy sits with those who wear them, but wouldn't wear a MacDonald of the Isles Hunting kilt b/c it's not their clan.

With the vast amount of universal tartans out there now, most held as stock tartans at a mill, I'd think most pipe bands, especially in Scotland where wearing another's tartan isn't generally done, would be looking to change their uniform to a Universal / District tartan OR have their own tartan designed and woven. I would think this especially true of new bands just forming and looking for a tartan to wear.

My clan tartan, the Ross clan, is available often but never as a less expensive kilt.
I've one on the way right now and should have it in the next two weeks.
But I had to sell a lot of things to afford it where as many other popular clan tartans are inexpensive. So I've opted for Black Watch and Sport kilts Hunting tartan. Also hope to add Scottish National soon if money can be saved.
What about clan septs and those tartans? Can one who wants to keep family involved wear one if the others if part of said sept??

I was going to say, just wear what you want and leave it there, but as I started to think about mine, I realized I had each one for a VERY specific reason. I might be the outlier, as my reasons are not always clan oriented, but that would be my answer…wear it for a reason
Wallace – Pipeband and in honor of one of New Mexico’s territorial governors.
Black Stewart – I like the tartan and needed a solo kilt that dressed up nicely
McDonald – Santa Fe Scottish Rite body Tartan and one of the clan Tartans I am affiliated with
Montgomery – I wanted a purple kilt and my son’s given name is Montgomery.
Black Watch- I think every piper ends up with a Black Watch
    Buchannan – Pipeband
McLeod of Lewis – because I am a Steeler Fan and it is a great Tartan to cheer the Black and Gold in
Buying my second clan Tartan, Chattin, my wife’s family.

As stated I do look at who I am around, I do not wear the McLeod to a highland games, or the Buchannan to any Masonic event as I am assumed to be a shriner.

Easily explained Rocky, we are talking CIVILIAN kilt attire, not military and OK civilian pipe bands are in betwixt and between Military and civilian wear, but as pipe bands lean towards the military in how they operate then it seems to be recognised that the band tartan is worn without a fuss.

Interestingly, I had an uncle in the Black Watch and he always maintained that he could not wait to wear "his" tartan when on leave.
