I just nabbed this on ebay for a very low price.

This sporran looks like a day sporran to my eyes and I plan to use it as such and wear it with my tweed day jacket. In the view of the Rabble, does the fact that there's fur on it push it into this "Semi-dress" category that many are so unfond of?

Finally, I think it looks ok as it is, but do you folks think I should replace the leather tassels that it once apparently had?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Nathan, that is a pretty decent sporran.

Here are a couple of thoughts:
1) I would call it a day sporran that just happens to have some fur. I don't get the whole "semi-dress" sporran thing. T each their own.
2) I, personally, prefer no tassels most of the time. They make me think that there's a cavalry column behind me when I'm walking. I would leave them off. Just my tuppence.

First of all, nice find! Congratulations. Secondly, I understand there is a plethora of leather sporrans out there with an assortment of fur covered fronts. I consider these to be sporrans for daywear, especially when the leather is brown. I realise that many people may wear this style of sporran with black tie, or for "semi-formal" events (whatever that is) but to my eye, it looks a wee bit out of place and not nearly formal enough (i.e. - silver cantled sporrans).

If I owned this sporran I would do two things: 1) Wear it with my tweedy daywear attire. 2) Have leather tassels added to the front. However, I do think this particular sporran looks rather smart without the tassels too, so the option is yours. I think either plain, braided tassels or flat, knotted tassels would look equally smart.

I'm going to agree with Kyle and say that this falls squarely into "Daywear" and avoids the dreaded "Semi-dress" catagory for several reasons:

1) no metalwork (studs, bells on the tassels, chain tassels, etc)

2) Brown.

It's quite a smart looking sporran- wear it with pride (but not with your Prince Charlie )

Personally, I'd add the tassels. I think it gives a daywear sporran some visual interest and breaks up the plain front. But honestly, it's fine with or without the tassels.

This confirms what I was thinking. Thanks one and all. No buyers remorse here . My current day sporran is black and I wanted something in brown but didn't want it to look like every second sporran.

Artificer, I wouldn't dream of wearing this with my Charlie or one of my formal doublets as I have two sporrans that would be far more appropriate for that.

I think I'll wear it without the tassels until I find a really inexpensive source for them or learn to make them by hand. The kilt shop near where I live charges quite a bit for replacement leather tassels, when they even have them, then there's the cost of having them put on. Going that route would make the sporran nearly as costly as if I had purchased it new. My old regimental day sporran had no tassels and looked ok to me.

Fate will probably throw me a good deal on tassels some time down the road. Either that or I'll learn how to do that marvelous knot myself...
