Nice pictures, Katia. I especially like the fact that you are wearing a sgian dhu with your boots. My wife expressed strenuous objections when I bought a low-cost “boy’s” sgian early this year, and doesn’t like me to wear my “weapon”.
And McElmurry, I like your sense of paranomasia.

Mike

I have some really nice, OLD ski socks and soccer (futbol) socks I use that are thick and knee high.
The benefit to them? They have Coolmax woven into them and that helps with my feet, which sweat like mad due to a small fiber neuropathy. I'm not hating on nice wool socks, but if my feet get wet, they get cold and damp, and then I'm pissy the rest of the day.

LOL, thanks. My mum tells me I tend to get strange--and sometimes disapproving-- looks at the Highland Games when wearing it (I'm often oblivious to these things, so I'm sure it happens even more often than she notices). It is certainly the item of dress people tend to comment on most when wearing on a "normal" day (Tartan Day).

I wear two knives everyday, as well as a multitool that has its own knife. I grew up, and still live, in the country. You never know when you'll need a good knife. :-)

If you will only wear your kilt at special occasions = rather rare, I should, like Toby, say go for the best. However, if you are wearing your kilts on a more regular basis, kilt hose costing $75 for a single pair should be a factor on most budgets, because even expensive socks are worn out.
I have several times bought kilt hose from Brevin&Co. You get 10 pairs for £40. They are of an acrylic/wool blend, meaning that they are pretty durable and available in two sizes and seven colors. Only problem: If you have long lower legs they may not be long enough. Also they are not very thick, but during spring and summer it is an advantage, I think, compared to thick hose.

If you just want "everyday" hose try Hamilton Dry Goods (here in Tennessee but can find them on eBay). They make some nicely woven (with designs) kilt socks in cotton and in various colors. I wear them a lot in summer.

There's some good recommendations here and I might have to follow up on those lighter, cotton ones. To paraphrase and invert a line from Game of Thrones, "summer is coming"

Re: wind bags -- I thought that's what makes bagpipes work! Without a windbag the pipes are an unplayable restricted oboe without even a mono-tonal accompaniment!

*** I got a four back of these and they seem like a good value for the price, wore a pair to the symphony tonight.
