John, you shouldn't have any problem making a kilt. I've found it really isn't so difficult but it does take patience and care. Go slow, take your time and it'll be a good looking kilt. I did find one thing that helps make it easier. I use Stitch Witchery tape to hold down the pleats from waist to hip. It keeps the pleats from moving at the sewing machine and eliminates the pins. It's applied with a steam iron.
