I have very muscular calves and find that most typical kilt hose do not go up high enough on me. If they do, they tend to try and cut off the lower part of my leg after a day of wear. I do have two pair that I purchased at a game two years ago and do not remember from whom I purchased them. My problem lies with buying online. I can't feel them and see if they would fit properly. My question is, does anyone know of any retailers or X-Marks sellers who make them for larger calves? Or is there special wording in the description that I am looking for like..."fits fat calves"? Thanks once again to the great rabble.

The Scottish Tartans Museum Gift Shop sells House of Cheviot's "Harris" line of kilt hose which is described as being "fully fashioned" for larger calves up to 26" diameter. http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/skye.html *edit: ha, I just realised that's the same line of hose the others have recommended, but at least now you have several sources to shop around with.

Or you could get me to make you a pair of hose that will fit you exactly.

Can you measure the circumference of your calf? I have 17" calves and find that normal kilt hose tend to be a little snug, but they fit OK. The Lewis hose fit me great. There are also a few companies that sell hand knit hose which can be made to fit wide calves (over 20").

The Harris hose mentioned above are very good and comfortable. I have four pair. Also, there are vendors that will make hose to your measurements. I have a couple of pair of arygle hose from Skye Highland Outfitters that were made to my measurements and they fit perfectly. They are a bit warmer than the Harris hose though, and a bit courser of hand. Overall the quality of both is all you could ask for.
Pipers hose from Gaelic Themes are also very, popular for us GOS (gentlemen of substance) . I got mine from the College of Piping. Excellent hose and first class service. I have 17 1/2" inch calves and there is room to spare. If money is no object then you can't beat made to measure from someone like piperdbh or via Matt Newsomes better half. Both of whom produce superb work.

So the Lewis or the Harris? Do you stock both?
