			Headgear at a formal event

					Hello all,
What is the general opinion on whether to wear traditional headgear with the kilt at very formal events, like an evening wedding? I am a guest at a wedding in St. Andrews, Scotland in a few weeks and am putting together my kit. Just curious what the thoughts on this are.

I was raised that gentlemen never wear hats indoors, especially in church.

What ever you wear, remove it indoors unless you are under arms or colors ( a flag bearer or honor guard in uniform).

*** I can add that where men have hats at a Scottish Wedding (Top Hats with morning dress), they are carried in the hands but never actually worn on the head. Certainly never inside a Church or indoors. The only exception would be for a religious wedding where men are expected to cover their heads (Judaism, Sikhism). At most kilted weddings a hat would be likewise superfluous but if one wanted to carry a bonnet in one's hands, I rather expect a balmoral would be the most appropriate choice, but my advice would be to go bare headed.

Thanks for the reminder! Fortunately, I am not such an uncouth person as to wear a hat indoors at the wedding. My question was directed more at the custom before and after!

LOL I just realized that I typed "fornal" event in the thread title...not exactly a great way to introduce myself to the community! In any event, I will likely go bare headed to be safe, but was curious as to the accepted norms.

We were in St. Andrews the other day, it is not somewhere that we visit often, but as always, the place never fails to impress. You have your answer in the posts above and whilst bareheaded is the usual choice, if the weather happens to be as as grim on the day, as it was a few days ago, then a balmoral would be a wise consideration! Have fun.

I was just going to say that, Jock! The "foul weather rule" is something to follow: dress for the weather!
