I'll be there with the Louisville Pipe Band on Saturday (and helping to run the pipe band contest that afternoon). Not staying for anything that night.

This year, there will be no sanctioned P&D contest - too expensive. So, no solos in the morning. Instead, we're having the first Pipe Band Invitational. 6 bands will compete between 1400 and 1600 Central time (1500 and 1700 Eastern).

The competition format will be a 20-minute window. The bands will play their normal sanctioned tune set for their grade (EUSPBA grade 4 is a mini-MSR, grade 5 is a march set), followed by any other set(s) of tunes they wish to play, as they would for a concert performance. Winners will be determined by the spectators. Any tie-breaking will be done by a couple of impartial judges recruited for the purpose.

The bands have also agreed to do two additional performances during the day (this will probably be up on the main field), plus the massed bands for the opening ceremony around noon.

A very interesting chap and not a bad piper to boot. When he was ambassador to Georgia, it was not unknown for him to drag out the pipes and give them a whirl.

Didn't get to meet anyone that said they were coming today, but DID see ForresterModern and TheBoy in late morning. This was well before the rain showers drenched everyone at the band competition. Fortunately, there was enough of a let-up to get the last band through and we were able to complete the contest.

First place went to Nashville Pipes & Drums, second went to Wolf River Pipes & Drums (Memphis, TN), third to the Louisville Pipe Band. I think all of the bands enjoyed the format and the audience (those that stuck it out) appreciated the variety of performances as well.

I remembered at the last minute Friday evening when they had a blurb on the evening news, so The Boy and I got up early Saturday and kilted up for the drive down. We were both shoehorned into our Dutch Friendship Tartan handsewns by Bonnie---Carter has two years of growth on his since she made them, and well, lets just say my new day job working from home has wrought havoc on my weight loss program.

We ran into John (EagleJCS) back by the pipe band prep area and had a great talk. I also ran into our xmarks friend HeathBar and caught up with his life a bit. Seems that Heath has been scarce on the forum for a while because he and his wife have adopted four kids which have filled their lives to over brimming. He smiled widely and I could see that he was very happy, and I was happy for him.

Boy got into the kids' highland games demonstrations and won first prize for his age in the hammer throw when he heaved a rubber mallet about 30 feet down the improvised range. He wore his medal with great pride while we watched the master's and pro's set new records in their version of the hammer throw---world records I believe. Then we watched the official opening and the combined bands on the pitch.

Scotch eggs and chips for lunch and some ice cold water finished off our day as we left before the rains came, and The Boy caught a two hour nap in the car on the way home. Sorry that we didn't get to stick around longer or have the luck to run into any other xmarkers besides John and Heath.
