Cool Unusual Kilt Hose/Garters - Can Anyone Identify?

    Hi Guys n Gals,

So I have been flicking through a bunch of photos to post to my facebook page, and I noticed these hose and garter. They look mighty unusual to me - can anyone identify them, and where yours truly might get a pair?

A friend on facebook sugested 'twist cuff hose with the flashes through the twists', but I am not sure what they are. Any suggestions?

I think you will find that the garters are just standard, ordinary garters.

The hose, I would think are home made. The tassels look like a later addition.

I wish I could see more... from that portion I can't tell what's going on.

Interesting, it appears that there are deep red and white (ecru) icords as part of the fold over. Looking at the consistent angle of the red & ecru i-cords it appears that they connected to another band below the frame of the picture. The bright red and appears to be regular flashes. As OC Richard says it would be nice to see larger picture.

Interesting. The top of the hose is ecru, but the tassels are clearly white. It almost gives the ecru the appearance of a raw, cut, unfinished edge.

I agree that the garters look like they are just ordinary garters.

I've e-mailed the place where i ripped the photo - I hope they come back with an un-cropped photo, or more information. It does look like they are linked into the hose somehow at a regular spacing - it is difficult to see anything more from the photo.

This is really easy, guys. They have tassels (as stated before) that are twisted together and tacked down. The flashes are regular tassels.

    They were probably homemade.

IMHO, from what is seen in the picture I believe that the ecru/red cords end in tassels is an assumption does not have enough data to support. Since the ends of the I-cords are not seen it is difficult to say how they are finished. The end of the flashes can not be seen and it is impossible for me to say if they end in a fringe or a tassel.

If the ecru/red cords are tacked down then it would increase the difficulty of placing and tying the flashes more difficult. The flashes would have to be inserted through the cords, pushed up under the fold and then tied.

I would be simpler to (from top down) knit about of half inch (1.3 cm) of stockinette or rib, knit ecru I-cords, knit in red and create red i-cords. Once I-cords are long enough return to knitting hose.

This would allow you to fold the flap up over the upper leg as the flashes are tied. Fold the top of the hose down.

No need for tassels, no need to tack the tassels down. If tacked down the I-cord create point to easily catch EVERY thing and tear the hose.

There may be tassels but from the picture I do not see enough support for this assumption.

I too suspect that it is an insert between two sections of ribbing, as they lean to one side as though not exactly aligned top and bottom.

There are little gadgets which will make the cord when a handle is turned, or it can be done on double pointed needles. It looks like three stitches of the rib were used for each cord, though a fourth one could have been added and reduced at the end.

The cords were probably twisted together as they were made and slid back onto a needle correctly positioned for continuing the knitting.

I have a very vague recollection of this photo being discussed some years ago but I have absolutely no idea what search terms you would use to try and find it.
