need advice

I challenged a local sportscaster to wear a kilt on air as a joke.
He said that if we make it, he would wear it.

What is the correct pleat for dress, and isit appropriate to use his clan colors if his last name is German (Moser)?

The colors are red, yellow and white. Guessing 15, 4, 4.

Any suggestions. I would like to have it done by mid September as an advert for the Heroes Harvest Festival.

Well, more questions than answers but here goes.

Why term it a "joke"? You're not going to get much love on this forum (so to speak) with that terminology or attitude. Advert, as you later say, or challenge or. . . almost anything other than joke/costume/other terms that label the kilt as something other than a natural choice of garment.

No such thing as "correct pleat for dress." Knife-pleat is very traditional but Matt Newsome presents good information on the traditional status of box pleats as well. But knife pleating is probably most recognized as trad Scottish so I'd call that your best bet.

Where did you get "clan colors" for a German surname? As you'll also read here, the concept of clan tartans was pretty much invented during the Victorian Era (with a few notable historical exceptions). It sounds as if you already have the fabric, so go ahead. Make sure he knows the name of the tartan and some background of the clan it's associated with, so he can treat it with respect and answer basic questions.

15, 4, 4, leaves me scratching my head. Thread count? but that's not a tartan count. Pictures would help with suggestions for pleating, but the most direct way is just to pin up some ideas (to sett, to various stripes) and see what works best. Do you have any instructions? There are some available online (but you get what you pay for) and most here recommend Barb T's book The Art of Kiltmaking which is available from her website.

You did not miss it completely. I was at a beer fest and was not thinking clearly. But not going to back out.

As to the advert, it was meant to show the conservative people of thisnarea that there is oter ways of living that does not make us devient in any way.
i am part of a Living History Society, and that is what was meant for advert. Bad wording on my part. I was still not totally sober when I wrote that question.

If I offended anyone, I had not intended for that to happen.

There are a number of tartans with German heritage as their basis. You may want to start there. There is also a Colorado state tartan that could be used. Or there are the basic Red Stuart, Black Stuart etc.

Are you making this kilt or will it be purchased?

I am not "playing" with my kilt wants and do really want to continue with my Scottish/Irish heritage.

I don't know how to put it anyway else.

I think Friday was suggesting a German-linked tartan for your local sportscaster, not for you. I was going to go there but it sounded as if you already have the fabric?

The German Tartan is for Josh. I do not follow the germanic side much.

I do not have the fabric yet. It was suggested that I go to a fabric store. But I prefer to find a real tartan.

If this is a one-time deal AND you don't yet have the fabric AND you have never make a kilt before, then purchase is likely your best choice. There are any number of options for low-cost kilts, discussed at length on this board.

If you already have the fabric and want to tackle the project, there are also lots of resources here and elsewhere online. Let us know where you are starting so we can help you make good choices!

Were it me, I'd get the German Heritage Tartan made in a casual kilt construction from PV. In theen it will cost less than buying fabric, a book and learning how to sew a kilt.

Just my 2 cents...
