Welcome Mark, I used to listen to Acker Bilk, does that qualify?

I'm more a celtic lover than jazz, but it goes to show - there is a kilt for every taste!

Life is good in a kilt.

Celtic stuff is good! But I also love jazz! Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson, George Shearing... 8) Ahh but I also love Bach, Chopin, Scheonberg, Hindemith, Fleetwood Mac, Loreena McKennitt... heck! I'll listen to just about anything but rap.

I have to say I like Mark's style. I do like Miles Davis but really like Oscar Peterson, and Diana Krall knocks me out.

thanks to everyone for the warm welcome! i dig lots of different music, too. as a french hornist, of course i was brought up on classical music (Mozart is still my favorite from an architechtural viewpoint) and for awhile I was quite to Loreena McKinnett fan (did I spell that right?) but eventually lost touch with what she's doing.

My sister-in-law is a piper in Calgary (also a singer/guitarist and plays some whistle) but refuses to consider herself a musician.

I have heard of the Trondheim and Molde Jazz Festivals and have been trying for the last few years to get booked there! Guess I'm not famous enough yet.

Hamish, the New Orleans style is very popular in the Scandinavian countries and, interestingly, some of our most avant-garde players in the 70s and 80s began with a sort of Trad (traditional) Jazz revival movement.

Welcome JazzKiltz. What part of Brooklyn do you live in? I lived in the Heights for a bit, and Midwood for a bit. Good to hear that New York is beginning to catch on. I just got the original Utilikilt myself, it's really comfortable, huh? I used to love cruising the dives for live jazz. Smalls was my fave 'till they closed it last spring I think. Kavehaaz and Detour for dates (sometimes the Jazz was good). Do you have a favorite recommended hangout, or spot you play at?

Thanks zeytoun. I live in Park Slope and used to live over in Ft. Green. Small's was great (only played there once, tho...) and for a while I was playing fairly regularly at Detour. Fun place to play with a great crowd. Kavehaz has moved up into the 20s and I haven't been since they left SoHo. I like Tonic because they have an actual piano (but I've heard it isn't in great shape) but the booking policy there is quite arcane and I'm apparently not bright enough to figure it out.

Yep, my kilt is THE most comfortable thing I've put on in quite some time, maybe ever. I have to make a correction, though. My UK is the Neo-Trad not the Original. Weird how a couple of the pleats insist on rolling out, though. Don't quite know what to do about that.

Well, getting late, gotta sleep. You guys are great. Later,

    mt

Graham does Loreena sing in Gaelic,I really enjoy music when it is sung in whatever language the songs originate from.I have some Irish Gaelic,Scotish Gaelic, and Welsh in my collection and they are some of my favorites.Sorry to go off thread but I do have a music question for Jazkiltz.I hear people classify jazz into catagories like hot, cool etc..1) do the musicians use these terms? 2)What are the differances?

    Thanks
    Dave
