I do have that book in my library, David. Thanks, I'll take another look at it. Hopefully, Matt Newsome will chime in at some point too.

    Cheers,

Alright I don't get out in the evenings these days as much as I used to, but I have not seen castelated hose, or a sgian being worn on the outside, for quite some time now(over 20 years ago). I think it was at some white tie do at Achnacarry if I remember correctly and I don't recall them ever being a common sight.

Thanks for confirming that it wasn't just Christie's artist's license/showing off the [sgian] merchandise! I'm torn between "nice way to show off the decorated sheath" and "good way to lose your sgian" LOL

I think you'd only want to do that with a sgian dubh designed for it (with either some form of clip on the sheath or a loop through which you can pass the garter). I do like the way it looks, despite it being a somewhat antiquated style.

Now I know why one would want one of those fancy sheaths on a sgian dubh.
I always wondered why you would want to have a silverclad sheath sticking in your sock.

Yup, castellated hose are just one of those things that can add a bit of extra flare to a formal evening outfit. They are not very common these days, but are still available. You can order them custom through the Scottish Tartans Museum gift shop in either diced or argyle.
