Now, Graham, it all depends upon what you mean by "formal"! Formal to me means Evening Dress/Black Tie, in which case a Prince Charlie, a black barathea Argyll or Crail jacket will fit the bill perfectly. [A photo of my Prince Charlie can be seen on page 6 of my album - link below - and one of my Crail jacket is on page 2.]

If you are thinking along the lines of a Charcoal grey TWEED Argyll jacket, well, that would be best worn with a tie and constitutes smart day wear.

As for price: I'd say that quoted by Hector Russell (David's link) is pretty much average for a tweed Argyll. You might do a little better by surfing around but somehow I doubt it, if you are buying new! My Charcoal Argyll was off-the-peg and cost £195 last year, but my Lovat Green was a bespoke jacket and cost £220 six years ago! [A photo of my Charcoal Argyll is on page 6 of my album, and one of the Lovat Green Argyll on page 5.]

By the way, tweed day jackets are not very often hired out so you might have some difficulty in finding ex-hire ones being sold off at knock-down prices.

(NB: Tweed day jackets (Argylls) used to be available only in Lovat Green or Lovat Blue, but in recent years Charcoal has come on the scene and is so much more versatile as it 'goes' with any tartan. Black Argylls are really too formal for day wear and should be kept for less stuffy evening dress occasions.

I hope this helps rather than confuses!
