Great choice, the Heritage of Scotland My first was the Hamilton Grey like in my pic - I've gone on to get a denim one as well - the kilt bug is addictive, be warned

Already got the bug. 8 days after I got that kilt I have already ordered my next one (should be arriving tomorrow). Got my eyes on two others, as well as saving money to invest in a handmade woollen one!

I bought my first kilt a few months ago for my wedding this summer. My ancestors came to America from Scotland and Ireland so I wear my family tartan to honor them. i think i will only wear it for special occasions because not too many folks wear them here in TEXAS!!!

I've wanted to wear one since I first saw a piper 35 years ago.

Made a Renaissance Faire great kilt costume last summer, and purchased an inexpensive PV last winter. Now I'm hooked and saving up for a proper tank! I also sew a bit, so I've purchased the Art of Kilt Making. I'll attempt to make a kilt over the winter.

I used to think jeans were the most comfortable clothing possible. Not even close to a kilt.

I wear a kilt because I find it comfortable and I dig the look. Even though it is technically a skirt, I feel manly wearing a kilt. I also get to show off my cycling legs, haha.

And sometimes you just have to do something that seems unexpected and out-of-the-ordinary just to say you did it. The drunken conversations that I have had at the bar with a wide range of people because of my kilt, which I probably would never otherwise had any reason to talk to, makes it worth it.

It makes life that much more interesting.

Ditto for the cycling legs but now I have to explain that you don't have to shave your legs for kilts.
I'm just trying to be the person my dog thinks I am.

I wear a kilt as a symbol of my Highland/Cape Breton heritage generally and my clan specifically. However, I have seen black guys in kilts my whole life though admittedly it was usually part of either a pipe band or military uniform. One of the best pipers I know is a black guy from Halifax, Nova Scotia.

I also remember the whole Scottish delegation (including two black guys) wore kilts at the World University Debating Championships back when I competed at the same.

It's not common, but then again, I wore high top kicks, saggy jeans, a hoodie and a backwards full back baseball cap to hip hop cyphers in my teens so I can't really call anyone out for biting my cultural styles. ;)

Due to low cost synthetics coming out of Pakistan, people have more access to kilts then ever before. It would have been a $500-$800 prospect for a kilt a few years ago and that's before the $150 - $250 sporran the $80 hose etc... So for the most part, only people with a real desire to represent their Scottishness forked out that kind of money to go kilted.

Nowadays, most anyone who can afford designer jeans can afford a kilt of some quality so we're going to see a lot more people take the plunge into the free waters of kilt wearing. What that does to the tradition is an open question, but change is certainly afoot.
