I bought a Carse of Gowrie (Bauhaus boy) sporran for a mate of mine for Chrizzy, It's not quite the same design as you're after and it's also brown but it's near enough in the same price bracket. It's a good quality leather and well constructed. I think my mate has since removed the tassels without issue.

Thanks, EB. It is very helpful to have reviews of the material and workmanship from a trusted source! For the extra $2, I would probably just get the one that doesn't have tassels in the first place. Nonetheless, I do find it a bit ironic that it costs more, to get a sporran that has less

I'd guess that the finish on the flap in your picture would make that $2 difference. It looks like there was more work put into it.

R Kilts also has their "Classic Sporran" that looks very similar to the Kinloch Anderson.

I can vouch for the Bauhaus Boy sporran (I just dragged it out to check the material), it's my 'go-to" day sporran, and definitely not leatherboard. I actually found it a bit stiff when I got it, so I stuffed a pair of kilt hose inside when it was not being used and it softened up nicely (I'm a bit tentative about putting any leather treatment on something that will rub against my kilt). Now I have a sporran strap which I had made by my local cobbler and the whole set was far less than $100.
Cheers,
Cameron

See, there's proof that even foot odor can have a constructive purpose !

On a hot summers day, it could soften anything!

I got replies from both Kinloch Anderson and Bauhaus Boy. Neither of them use leatherboard. K.A. says theirs is pigskin and made in Edinburgh, while B.B. was a bit more vague, saying it is top grade grained leather from a wholesaler in Scotland... perhaps the lower cost reflects manufacturing in a place with cheaper labour? Or B.B. saves by being internet only? Several people have attested to the quality of their Bauhaus Boy sporrans, so I'm feeling like he has the edge on value in this comparison...

Sounds like you've got your answer. Do they combine shipping if you buy two? ;)
