How Short is too short? Kilt length.

Right at the top of the knee is where I prefer the selvedge of my kilt(s) to fall. No higher...no lower. It also helps not to wear your kilt hose too bloody high as well.

I'm a 'top of the knee' sort of chap myself. Anything much lower than mid-knee looks odd to me, as does anything much higher than 1" above the knee.
This applies equally to traditional kilts and MUGS, although I only have traditional tartan kilts m'self.

It depends who's wearing it.

For a bloke anything more than 1 and a half inches above the knee is too short and too short just doesn't look good. I prefer at the top of the kneecap, myself.

For a woman about mid thigh is great. Anything higher is too short.

Got to be anywhere between the top of the knee and the middle of the kneecap. The old 'authorities' on kilt wearing always say that an outdoor kilt should be worn well above the knee so as to stop a wet kilt from sawing the backs of the knees. A word of warning though, if you've got 'a bit of a tummy' the kilt will sit slightly higher at the back, so anything above the 'top of the knee' or higher may be quite risque !.

As has been noted by others, there is a "range" that aesthetically just seems to proportionally look good, for most people running from mid-knee to just above the top. All my made-to-measure kilts are at the top of the knee, which is where I like them (another critical criterion!), like this one:





That said, however, I still have a couple of off-the-rack Stillwater kilts (that I was wearing back before I had any made to measure ones), an acrylic Standard and a wool "heavyweight" that I've saved for knockabout wear. Those hang about 3/4-inch lower on me, and to me they still look just fine in terms of length, being a bit above the center of my knee. But I most prefer the top of my kneecap.

I'm suspect that the guy in the green plaid skirt knew how "the kilt" was to be worn, and may have been choosing to be a "contrarian" .
But then again (and you never know) he could have been (or "be") very long waisted......LOL...

Really, my impression was that he was simply ignorant. You can't see it in the photo of course, but he also was wearing a formal-type silver-cantled fur sporran.

Note where the kilt straps are, too. Looks to me like if the center of the top strap was at his true waist as is customary, the kilt would be hanging properly.
