Thanks Bill and Larry. It's always nice to find a community to participate in. Maybe you guys can help me pass the time until I can afford another kilt or two - I"m already getting antsy.

Dave, Cool Jazz was a reaction to bebop in the 40s and contrasted the hyper complicated chord progressions and very fast, seemingly frenetic playing of the boppers by placing much more importance on a larger ensembles (6 to 10 players), a wider variety of instruments (Tuba, French Horn, Flute) and tonal colours and a certain attitude that came across in the music. It seemed, in some ways, subtle or distilled. Eventually, this style became associated with the West Coast. The terms cool and hot (in terms of jazz) are pretty much only used in an historical context.

Oops! Sorry Mark, I thought I had already greeted you, but just noticed that I hadn't. Here's a big warm welcome from Idaho.

Living near Salt Lake City, I thought maybe you were a fan of the basketball team, and I was going to have to tease you. Good thing the name is from the music!

Thanks Rufus. I actually spent two summers up in Sandpoint for a music festival about *cough, ahem, cough* years ago. Beautiful country and I had a ball.

You must be hip to Howard Johnson and Bob Stewart then. If not, check those guys out. I used to play in a band called Very Very Circus that had two tubas in it. I've wanted to have a band with two tubas ever since!!

He got me my first overseas tours when I moved to NYC and introduced me to LOTS of the cats here. He's certainly one of my heroes!
