There's a Bump!
This is my first pair of hose that I wear the traditional self tying garter. When I tied up and slipped it back under the "wrap around" I have a bump that shows it's there after my hose are folded down over it.
Am I doing something wrong?

No. However, after a bit of practice you may be able to tie a tidier and slightly smaller knot. Many of us avoid all that by using elastic garter ties, but its not an issue either way.

You must be--I always get a lump with my garters, not a bump. You really screwed up somewhere!
I think it's normal, as long as you're okay with it.

Yes I do have the elastic ones and have always worn them without the bump. But I did get some new "smart" looking hose that has the self tie. Ok I will sausage through.

I have found that you don't have to actually tie a knot, to keep them secure. Once the garter is round your leg fold one end over and under, go past it with the other and do the same. Friction and the fact that both ends will 'lock' together holds your hose up.

So Chas,
I wrap the garter around my calf, then as the ends (that I am holding) cross paths I just let them rest in an "X" and they will hold?

Don't feel too bad about the lumpy bumps unless they really bother you. It happens, ... though as written above you will get better minimizing the effect with practice.
Below is one of my best "bump" pictures taken AFTER (my son and I look a bit weatherworn due to all the haggis and gravy) this year's Burns dinner. Note that it's so bad the top of the hose is pulled down a bit. Some of that is due to my barely visible sgian dubh.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

The technique described by Chas seems to hold promise. I plan to try it next time. I, too, have noticed that the friction alone between the garter material and the two layers of hose tends to keep things in place. Good luck!
