I am struggling with what tartan to purchase for my first kilt as i can't afford my own family tartan but have read on the internet that Gordon was the clan Craigs originated from in Aberdeen . Once they got large enough they broke away and created the Craig clan . Does this mean i can wear the Gordon tartan as my own tartan ? I would love the Craig tartan but just can't afford it right now and want an entry level kilt . Any help on this would be greatly appreciated ( Kind of embarassed being scotich and knowing very little about my heritage )
Welcome to the forum from Edinburgh in bonny Scotland. Despite what you may read here from the postings of many, mostly non-Scottish contributors, there is actually no particular prohibition on anyone wearing a kilt in any tartan they choose so don't worry about that. You will hear stories about some tartans like the Balmoral being prohibited but, if you can get somebody to weave it for you, no-one is going to haul you up in front of a court, jail you and throw away the key. If you really do have sincere issues about people thinking badly of you for wearing a tartan to which you feel you have no particular association then simply tell them it is your maternal grandparents' and leave it at that.

Craigclan, Welcome too! I like Phils' answer very much. I had somewhat similar hesitations, but why should we? Enjoy being kilted. Cheers,
