A what a magical place. And they do a great Figaro. When I saw it there many years ago the moon was setting through the open back of the stage during the final scheme in the garden.

Yes John, Opening Night was Friday, and we were lucky that we went on Saturday since all of the tailgaters got rained out on Friday.
Its fun to do highbrow now and then, especially kilted! My wife stopped counting at 43 women who checked me out, and I guarantee that they were all significantly more highbrow than I.

Grizz, you have my respect and admiration!

qwynng, you must have had waaaay better seats than us. I have been able to see the moon at other performances but we were in the nosebleeds for this performance, at almost $300 per couple!

I've worn a kilt a few times to the opera, one to the Royal Opera and another to Philip Glass - Einstein on the Beach. The latter I was like, why did I bother? Since partner forgot and everyone else was dressed down in casual - even though it was a big event (first time that opera had been performed here in 20 years)...standards are slipping!

(Didn't take the picture, hence him missing most of the kilt..>DOH. Does show the vintage Conneticut (?) 1860's silk waistcoat, though...I LOVE Silk Brocade. Opera was Rameau - Castor & Pollux btw)

I can remember when at the end of any opera at Covent Garden, the prima donna was presented with a bouquet by a flunky in a wig. Not any more.

I wore my kilt last night to Gloriana and last month to La donna del largo in which the entire male chorus was kilted and Juan Diego Florez was in Royal Stewart tartan kilt at the end to recall George IV's visit to Scotland (although he was upstaged by Joyce Denato's singing). I was probably the most overdressed man in the auditorium, but what the hell.

If one cannot get dressed up properly for the opera, then when?

I have to say that at Covent Garden, the men in the audience seem more interested in scoffing the grossly overpriced smoked salmon and warm champagne in the interval rather than dressing up.

Very true...my excuse. I can wear the garb that's a little too much or fragile for other occasions!

I'm a waistcoat junkie, too. But you might want a longer one. ;)

It's a Victorian waistcoat, 1860's - so it doesn't have a modern 'cut' or length. I can't magic extra brocade either - the back was already remade by SEW (surprisingly well in fact, I'd recommend them they took the time to make it work) and resized to me. Ditto the high collar...I guess that space would be filled by a cummerbund.

Also, that was taken at the end of the night, I suspect my kilt had slid down again...always a problem with me! I need a proper belt...
