Campbell tartan, Duke of Argyll's colors
Just sent out this very special kilt. It is the ancient Campbell tartan, and over the years I have made many kilts in this tartan. However, this customer had a special request. He wanted the cloth to be woven in the colors favored by the current Duke of Argyll. This required a special weave, which I was happy to do -- I happen to know the mill where the Duke gets his tartan woven and they were happy to oblige my request for this order.
Here is the Duke of Argyll displaying his tartan in these lovely light shades.
And here is the kilt I just sent off in the post. It's a 6 yard knife pleated kilt, heavy weight fabric, all hand sewn as are all of my kilts.

Matt,
You take the most amazing pictures of the tartan you work with. Fantastic pictures.

Thanks. It helps when the subject you are photographing is beautiful to begin with. :-)

Matt,
Absolutely gorgeous. What a great idea for a custom-weave. What is the sett size?

The sett size on this one is about 10". However, being the Campbell (Black Watch) tartan, the sett size is generally about twice as large as you would expect on this, so a 10" repeat is actually on the small side for this. I pleated to the black line on green, which is traditional for this sett. There are two repeats of this line per sett repeat.

Matt: Lovely kilt, as usual. Magnificent photographs. Now I can tell all my friends that I have two kilts crafted by the "Kiltmaker to the Duke of Argyll". They'll be so jealous.
I like the way the Duke ties his garters outside his hose. It imparts a more rugged look. There's a post out there somewhere on that subject.
John
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.
