I carry things in my sporran. After all, that's what it's for. I also make use of my pockets when I have them although I prefer not to use the side pockets on the outside of my jacket for anything more than a few business cards as weight disturbs the fall of the fabric and I find large bulges unsightly.
In fact, one of the reasons I've never purchased a hair sporran even though I find them quite handsome is because they are typically seriously lacking in storage capacity.

In my sporran, I carry keys, a reduced thin wallet (just the essentials, leave the customer loyalty cards home), a bill fold with money clip, a small change purse and my cell phone.

I also move the phone to the inside pocket of my jacket when I'm wearing one, especially on occasions where I need to create room for my flask.

I would wear my waist belt if I wasn't wearing a waistcoat. I personally don't like the look of the naked top of a kilt as I find it unfinished. When dressing super casually, I leave my shirt untucked and forgo the belt. That's just my taste as I know there is plenty of precedent for dressing this way.

While on those rare occasions that I would be wearing my kilt with just shirtsleeves and no jacket or waistcoat, such a piece may be useful to free up space in my sporran, but given the rate of change of cell phone technology, I wouldn't want to pay too much for a bespoke leather item that may be obsolete in a year and a half when our phones are in our glasses.

That pretty much sums up my use of a sporran as well with the exception that I do not like the look of an untucked shirt. To me it looks a bit too casual. Perhaps with a utilikilt it could work.

Fair enough. I'm talking about super casual when performing with my Celtic Rock group and need to inject some "rock" into the look.

I had Tom (a_hay) make my 'custom' sporran a little taller than standard so I could fit my Samsung Note 2 in it which is quite a long phone.
He did a fine job and it fits perfectly.

I don't tuck-in a pull over, but will "roll" the bottom so it doesn't cover the sporran. Utilikilts aren't my thing either!
