Well, this has gone from socks to shoe laces -- great discussion and sharing though. I love the way these threads can develop. I have decided to order the socks because from all you good folks have shared, I am sure I can make them work out no matter what. Moreover, the whole shoe lace thing got me thinking, oh yes, I never noticed but from way back in my Navy days all my laced shoes are left over right (still have two pair of Bates -- one dress black and one dress white). I think the main reason I never noticed is that after boot camp it all just came "naturally" (didn't even think about it) and now practically ALL my shoes are slip-ons -- no laces -- too lazy now to even tie my shoes

I have always found the "straight bar" lacing awkward to put on, so use left over right on my left foot and right over left on my right. (I had to look at the shoes I currently have on to verify this). Having had no military training, I am finding this thread enlightening, if not somewhat off topic. It is interesting the habits one develops without realizing it! I'll have to look at some of my other shoes to see what I've actually done (or just put on slip-ons).

And that tends to happen from time to time on the forum. Personally, I think it's great...when the deviation is meaningful and relatable to the OP in some aspect!

May be standard practice for some. I turn my kilt hose down Then pull the top of the sock back up over the first turn down. Gets the Sock top two inches lower and top of stock in corrct hight on my leg. Roddy

Cheers,
Goodness that looks sharp! We used to do bar lacing on our street shoes when I was a lad (our Etnies, Emericas, Vans, Osirus -styled shoes). It was more of a counter-culture thing as we saw it. Who knew that we were actually reinforcing a style that has traditinal roots (completely obliviously)?!
I see a relacing session in my dress shoes near future!

Though not as high in quality, I normally use some reenactment 1770's-ish stockings. Though they are intended for use with knee breeches, the make decent kilt socks for taller guys with big feet (6'2", US size 13eee). I pull them up to over my knee then do about a two inch fold and then fold them again to make a 3 to 4in cuff. I have found them to be quite nice for their low cost. I thought that the same method could feasibly apply to shooting socks.

A wee resource for those who aren't familiar with the various lacing methods:
