It would seem to that if someone makes a post that does not pique your interest in a positive way, dont bother commenting on that post. I find it incredibly rude when someone posts a picture of himself wearing his kilt and the immediate response from some folk is "Your kilt is too low, it should be above the knee," or "It looks a bit sloven, you should change your shirt" "You should be wearing brown shoes, not *insert whatever the person is wearing*. These aren't helpful or constructive suggestions. They are borderline arrogant because the commenter assumes their opinion of how a kilt should be worn is absolute truth. If a traditionalist sees a picture of a person wearing their kilt in a obviously contemporary way, applying their criticisms, which are based on the traditional view, is not really a fair assessment. 'Contemporary' doesnt follow the rules of traditional, it doesnt make any effort to remain the same. One year the trend for contemp kilt wearers might be to wear the kilt above the knee, the next year it might be to wear it slightly below. Contemporary is Fashion and trend based not tradition based.
So, basically, what you're saying is the only comments that should be made are "you're looking good" type of comments? No room for a differing opinion?

I'm really not sure that I want to hang around somewhere where I can't voice my opinions, good or bad.

If I see something I don't like, why can't I say that I don't like it (if I'm diplomatic about it)?

I'm not saying that no one can voice opposing opinoins, but it should be done politely, with tact, and with respect to another person's choice in style.

This is what I'm talking about:

"I prefer to wear my kilts above the knee, I'm not a big fan of that look but it suits your style." (critical, yet positive) VS "You're wearing it wrong, the kilt should sit above the knee" (arrogant and rude)

The problem is, that on this side of the pond, particularly in some parts of Scotland, what you consider as rude would be considered as being polite over here! I kid you not.

Adempsey: If you post a pic and ask, "Hey guys, whaddaya think?" you can't get upset when some people say they don't like the look. Well you can, but it's not very mature.

Even if you don't ask and the nature of your post, is "This is how I do it or this is a good look" there should be a reasonable expectation of reactions and honest responses to your fashion choices. Telling you your kilt is low is not an insult anymore than telling someone their fly is down. If you say, "this is how I roll," and own the look, fine but isn't it better to know that there are folks who will react this way to your outfit whether they tell you or not?

Traditionalists: I'd like people to avoid crapping on perfectly legitimate purchases that aren't to their tastes such as ghillie brogues, white hose, semi-dress sporrans and rabbit sporrans. They are part of the 21st Century concept of Traditional Highland attire. Saying they belong in the bin is rude indeed. Saying they aren't a popular choice among Highland gentlemen in the Highlands or stating that the look is not to your taste is a fair point.

Using words like "dreadful" "awful" etc... regarding rather expensive accessories makes people defensive. If the goal is education, a little tact goes a long way.

I dont believe telling someone their kilt is too low is like telling them their fly is down. The height at which you wear your kilt is a matter of personal taste (on the fashion side of kilt wearing, but perhaps not the traditional). If someone tries to degrade someone else's style choice by proclaiming it to be wrong, there is nothing valuable to learn from. Equating these two things clearly assumes that above the knee is correct, anywhere else is wrong. I don't believe that is the case at all.
