    (The ) Highlands (Of) Texas

I ordered some shirts online from a store in Highlands Texas. Gee this sounds like a Scottish community - had to look it up.

Only in Texas would they name a town Highlands that sits a few miles from Galveston bay and has an average elevation of 36 feet.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

A lot of "Old World" names came to the "New World". The church that my wife and I attended (and that she grew up in) in New Castle, PA, is called, Highland Presbyterian Church on Highland Avenue. It's on the 'North Hill' just a couple of blocks from Wallace Ave. and Crawford Ave (there are a lot of streets in NC with Scottish names). The church resembles a Medieval Scottish, gray stone Kirk with vaulted ceilings. Bagpipes were not uncommon at special services.

Simon Fraser fought as MacShimidh, a Highland chief… wrapped and belted in a plaid over the top of his linen shirt, like his ordinary kinsmen. He put a bonnet on his head, and stuck the Fraser emblem, a sprig of yew, in it. With the battle cry, A'Chaisteal Dhunaidh and the scream of the pipes, they charged to battle. 36 feet?
That is kind of high for that part of the state.
    So there!

The community was named Highlands because the east bank of the San Jacinto river (sea level), where Highlands is located, has a higher elevation than the west bank of the river.

Interesting. Usually when I hear Highlands and Texas in the same sentence, I think of the Highland Lakes area (up here in the Hill Country). The elevation up here at my house is around 1200 feet.

I live on the first and lowest of the string of Texas Highland Lakes. My house is at 500 feet and the nearby hills go to 1100 feet. Down by Galveston Bay 36 feet is high land.

I looked it up because the name was familiar and I thought of the Hill Country.
I call the Hill Country the Texas Rhineland. I usually pick up a few pounds of great sausages on my way through to and from Baytown - across I-10 south of Highland My smoker is from New Braunfels. I hear the wine is quite good too.

Well, I suppose it is relative, too. I lived in the Florida Keys - elevation about 5 ft. (changes with the tide). From that perspective Highlands would be the high lands.

Incidentally, you can use the Keys as the canary-in-the-cage for "global warming" (if one assumes it exists). My purpose is not to get political here, but to point out that the Keys will be the first place to go under if the oceans ever rise.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.
