Isle of Skye advice required.

I am currently awaiting a new kilt, but to alleviate the jonesing my thoughts have turned to the next kilt. The time will be coming, when, I can't help myself but, I feel the need to join the Brotherhood of the Isle of Skye. So I am seeking some advice from IOS kilt owners.

For me its a straight choice, 16oz wool but which weaver?

The two licensed weavers are Lochcarron and Marton Mills.

If you have an IOS kilt in 16oz wool, which mill did you choose and why?

Was it the sett size, colour way, selvedge, availability, what made you choose the cloth you did?

Any views are most appreciated.

Good choice on the tartan. I have an Isle of Skye kilt and I am always sure of getting compliments when I wear it. Mine is 16oz from Martin Mills. As to why, it was what my kilt maker recommended. It is a 4yd box pleat.

Thanks Phil, do you have a pic of it? I have seen many in Lochcarron Strome and Marton Mills PV but not in MM Jura.

I have one in the 13oz from MM. I had it pleated to an half and half stripe so as to emphasize the purple. The pic is not brilliant but hopefully you can see it. I am sure I have the samples somewhere, because I had to decide between 13 and 16oz, so if I find them I'll put up a pic.

I was surprised by just how much bigger the sett was in 16oz. But I went for the lighter weight cloth. If you are up our way make sure you have a look at it.

Thanks Harvey, I certainly will do, have just emailed you know who for his opinion, I will no doubt collect my new kilt in due course and will have a chat with him then. MM certainly seems to be a lovely colour way.

Mate, seems like you have got it bad! The IOS tartan is lovely though. You thinking another tank or a five yarder?

Steve with my waist it will be 6 yards at least.

. My COE tank and new 5+ yard Taylor Ancient will be for more formal or social occasions where I am unlikely to get it too dirty but I really fancy an IOS for more casual walking, drinking, everyday type activities.

It's the madness that infects us all.
