 Piper In The Chicago 'Burbs
Hello, everyone. I'm a newbie here, and found this forum while researching sett and stripe pleating for the new kilt I'm planning to buy. I found a great post by Barb T that was not only VERY informative, but she was even nice enough to use my tartan (Douglas). Next thing ya know, I'm sucked in, reading everything I can. There's a wealth of information here, and I'm so glad to have found this forum before making my first purchase.
I'm of Scots-Irish decent (Clan Creighton/ Crichton - Pa transplanted line) that married a Douglass whose family has been in IL since the Civil War era. I grew up in a town with a high school marching band that wore Scottish regimental attire, and became "kilted" at the age of 14. A year later, I began playing the pipes. I put them down for 25 years when young adulthood pulled in other directions, then went back to piping and kilt-wearing in 2009.
My current kilt purchase that I'm researching is the first kilt I've purchased on my own. Up until now, I've only worn a Royal Stewart full tank. But I'm to a point in my piping where playing outside of band events is going to be more and more frequent, and have decided to purchase my own. I've been in communication with Rocky at USA Kilts, and am looking at a 5 yard 16 oz Douglas Grey. He's been very helpful thus far in answering my million-and-one questions. Since a kilt IS menswear, and I'm female, I'll likely be a bit of a challenge. But, I've already got my eye on 2 other tartans I like (Scotland Forever & St Andrews), so I have a feeling this won't be the last time I'll be a challenge. 
Any other pipers here? or Midwesterners?
